What is our Policy on Home Learning?

Rationale--See Home Learning Policy

  • Home Learning is of positive value to children's educational development and assists in raising standards. Home Learning encourages the involvement of parents in their children's learning. Aims To encourage pupils to develop the practice of independent study.
  • To develop perseverance and self-discipline.
  • To allow practice of skills learnt in the classroom.
  • To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding.
  • To open up areas of study and to make possible the use of materials and sources of information that are not accessible in the classroom.
  • To involve parents (and other adults) in children's work.

Key Stage 1

Homework tasks include daily reading, times tables, phonic work, spelling, number work and occasional topic work. On average children in Key Stage 1 should spend between 10 and 20 minutes per day on homework.

Key Stage 2

Homework tasks include daily reading, spelling, and times tables. Weekly Literacy or Numeracy tasks and occasional topic work. In addition to written tasks homework may involve finding out information or preparing oral presentations. As children grow older parental involvement is still valuable at this stage but children are increasingly expected to take responsibility for their own work. On average children in Key Stage 2 should spend between 1 and 2 ½ hours per week.A rigid time allocation for homework tasks is not set because of the widely differing circumstances including age, ability, home conditions and other demands on children's time.

Additional Support

There is often a Homework Study Club held after school for pupils in Years 5 and 6 who wish to use computers for their homework
